ComputerWorld: Review of the 12-in. PowerBook

filed under Hardware

ComputerWorld's Ken Mingis reports on Apple's 12-in. PowerBook. Starting at US$1500, the latest version features a 1.5GHz G4 processor, 512Mb memory (the minimum needed for Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger to function comfortably), 60/80/100Gb hard drive, and an optional 8x SuperDrive.

Mingis notes that the latest PowerBook runs fairly cool, is quiet, and runs Tiger with satisfactory speed. Although battery life is quoted as "up to five hours", under normal circumstances around 3.5 hours seems more realistic. The one drawback noted, compared to its larger 15-in. and 17-in. cousins, is a lower quality display, with the 1024x768-pixel 12-in. screen being noticably dimmer than in the larger models.

Jack Kilby, IC Inventor, Dies

filed under Hardware

Jack Kilby, engineer and inventor of the integrated circuit, the electronic calculator, and the thermal printer, passed away on June 20th following a brief battle with cancer.

During a stoppage at the Texas Instruments plant in 1958, Mr. Kilby did not have the seniority to take some vacation time. Left behind in the office, instead of playing office chair hockey or foosball, on September 12th 1958 he demonstrated the first successful integrated circuit.

So how's your Nobel-prize winning work coming along?

Apple rejects suicidal 'Mac OS X on a Dell' option

filed under Hardware

While Dell, unsurprisingly, would love to add 5% to its volume by stamping out mid-quality grey boxes that run Mac OS X, Apple has decided not to participate in its own pointless death.

Non-emulated Windows on a Mac? Sure, why not. Mac OS X on an off the shelf Dell box? Unlikely, for the moment. However, the Macworld article makes the point that Apple may be sued to force its software to run on generic Intel boxes. I'm sure we all recall the suit against Data General, splitting its Nova software from proprietary hardware? No? The Soul of a New Machine... what do you mean, you weren't born then, damn you?
